TRAIL DIFFICULTY

There are many, many systems for rating trails among hiking organizations.  Just search “hike rating”  on the internet and you get over ten million hits. The systems range from simple to complex, but in general, they consider the length of the trail, the type of terrain and the elevation profile.  However, how difficult a trail is for any one person still depends on that individual’s experience, skills and fitness levels.  Feel free to call us to discuss matching your fitness level with our hikes.  In meantime, here are some generalities about our hikes that might help.

  1. The primary goal of all hikes is for everyone to enjoy themselves.

  2. None of our hikes require technical climbing skills or equipment.

  3. Most our hikes are on well-defined paths.

  4. Most hikes will have options for increasing or decreasing length.

  5. Choosing to skip a hike and just ‘hang’ back at the house or explore the town of Alpine is a perfectly acceptable option (it’s YOUR vacation, right?)

  6. Most of our hikes include elevations of 8000 to 11,000 feet with most hikes being predominately in the middle of that range.

  7. Most hikes will be at least 5 miles and at least 3 to 4 hours of actual hiking time.

  8. Hikes can and will be adjusted to fit the group.

  9. We always practice “Leave No Trace”.

PREPARING FOR YOUR HIKING VACATION

Hiking is physical exercise that requires some level of fitness.  It is a good idea to come to your vacation prepared to hike at least 5 miles at elevations above 8000 feet.  There are many informative and helpful websites available to help you get ready (no need to reinvent that wheel on this site).  Most would agree that you should start your training at least a month prior to your hiking vacation.  Try searching “determine fitness level for hike”.
